The Truth About Living Well in Manhattan

If you want to stay solvent, you may not want to take tips from Sex and the City for tips on shopping.  It is a great show and a lot of fun to watch, but a little unrealistic.  Many people have in Manhattan 8 years and spending money on lavish products is not always possible.  If you do, the realistic Manhattan girl or guy will have to make the choice of living in a studio apartment with 5 roommates or making a comfortable cot on the street.  This is not to say that you can’t enjoy living in NYC.  Most people love the city.  You get to be a part of some amazing events, but you do have to smart and responsible.

The truth is there are ways to look stylish in NYC without spending all your hard earned money.  Most people love hit movies and TV shows about the lives of people in New York City.  Their lives seem so glamorous, and it appears that most have more than enough money to burn while dating and having fun.  That can be misleading to young people living outside of New York because while there is a tremendous amount of wealth in New York, it is usually not the 20 something or 30 something’s that have this money.  Well, not unless they are privileged kids who have a trust fund or a superstar.   Coming to NYC with expectation such as this can be a harsh reality for many.  Unlike the shows How I Met Your Mother, Friends, Seinfeld, and Sex and the City, there are choices to be made to stay in the city.  Not many people can hang out with their friends all day and party all night and expect to keep an apartment.  They have to work all day and budget their money wisely.  People who live in Manhattan know that having the convenience of being in the city means that there would be some compromise especially in the area of shopping.

If you remain her long enough, you can find ways to shop at little boutiques, discount stores, consignment shops and even major department stores when they have sales.  If you save your money you can even treat yourself to the occasional new designer outfit.  There are just some things worth more than having the latest and most expensive fashions.  So while your friends are consumed by credit card debt, have long subway and commuter train rides to the outer boroughs, you can stroll through the streets of the city on your walk to and from work sporting the latest in discount clothing.  They may wear the latest and most expensive fashion, but you will be living in your conveniently located apartment in the city.  That just might be worth more than the $400 shoes.

Knox Gallery – More Artistic Treasures in Harlem, New York

Harlem is always known for its history, music and art. You can live here for years and one day walks down a specific street and see something new. Like most of  New York City it is all constantly changing with new and exciting restaurants, stores, etc.

If you are looking for a place to go for some spectacular art exhibit, walk over to 129 th Street near Leno Avenue and you will find Knox Gallery.

Knox Gallery is an exclusive exhibition space that displays the work of emerging and established fine artists of high quality and unique perspectives. Knox offers to serious collectors and art lovers the opportunity to participate in art experiences, to dialogue with the artists, and to purchase fine works at affordable prices. Our calendar has a list of selected artists, chosen for their well-seasoned and eccentric styles.

Knox specializes in showcasing the work of artists whose work reaches beyond the boundaries of the mainstream, focusing on different branches of contemporary art. These can include installations, conceptual art, visionary, esoteric and spiritually-inclined art, and art of the just cause.

The Gallery also features the artwork of Ms. Myra LaSister on permanent installation. Her work on display is from the archives of her original paintings dating back to the 1960’s. In this tasteful installation Myra’s son, Charles Knox LaSister, Chairman of the Board of Knox Gallery, pays homage to his mother. Entering the main gallery rooms at the top of the stairs, visitors will enjoy the wide-open and spacious, contemporary renovation. The atmosphere is charming, like a miniature ballroom with beautifully lit artwork as its intended dancers. Viewers will have plenty of space to move about as they freely flow from room to room.

Knox Gallery has a welcoming and homey feeling, yet its look is polished and elegant. The gallery finds its home in a beautiful brownstone on a tree-lined street in historic Central Harlem, in close proximity to public transportation. Open for special events and by appointment only: We look forward to your visit!
